The Microbiome Produces Neurotransmitters

Gut bacteria are not passive commensals: they actively produce neurotransmitters or their precursors. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium produce GABA (the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the nervous system, deficient in anxiety). Specific bacterial strains convert tryptophan into intestinal serotonin — which regulates not only motility but sends signals to the brain via the vagus nerve. Gut dysbiosis reduces GABA and serotonin production, increasing vulnerability to depression and anxiety. The vagus nerve is the primary communication channel between gut and brain. Crucially, 80% of its fibers carry signals from gut to brain (not the other way around): the brain continuously "listens" to the state of the gut. A healthy microbiome generates positive vagal signals — sense of wellbeing, calm, reduced stress.
