Every truth passes through three stages: first it is ridiculed, then it is violently opposed, finally it is accepted as self-evident.

Arthur Schopenhauer 1788 โ€“ 1860

This article is not a critique of modern science. It is a clinical observation of a recurring phenomenon in the history of biology: the intuitions of Natural Hygienism systematically precede academic research confirmations by decades. Not by chance. Not by luck. But because Hygienism starts from the direct observation of biological laws โ€” laws that exist independently of whether a scientific committee has ratified them.

Below, four documented examples. The tone is that of clinical observation: no polemic, no arrogance. Just the facts, with the dates.

1. Autophagy and Digestive Rest

Autophagy & Digestive Rest
Hygienism: always ยท Nobel Prize for Medicine: 2016
โŒ Conventional Dogma (decades)

Conventional nutrition promoted "5 meals a day" to stimulate metabolism, claiming that without food the body entered "starvation mode" and destroyed muscle.

โ†’
โœ… Hygienist Vision (always)

Hygienism has always maintained that fasting โ€” particularly nightly digestive rest โ€” is the time when the body repairs, detoxifies and regenerates. Continuous food intake prevents this process.

๐Ÿ†
Scientific Validation โ€” Nobel Prize for Medicine 2016

In 2016, the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to Japanese biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi for the discovery of the mechanisms of Autophagy โ€” the process by which cells self-degrade and recycle in the absence of food. Research confirms that the body regenerates and detoxifies only during fasting, not during active digestion. The Romeo Method's 8 pmโ€“12 noon protocol guarantees 12โ€“16 hours of daily active autophagy.

2. Acid-Base Balance and Calcium

2
Dairy, Calcium and Bone Health
Hygienism: always sceptical ยท Nurses' Health Study (Harvard): epidemiological confirmation

For decades the official nutritional recommendation โ€” supported by massive advertising campaigns funded by the dairy industry โ€” was simple and seemingly logical: drink milk and eat cheese for bone health. The calcium in dairy would guarantee strong bones and prevent osteoporosis.

Natural Hygienism always observed the opposite: the animal proteins in dairy produce an acid residue that lowers blood pH, forcing the body to buffer the acidosis by drawing on calcium from the bones themselves โ€” as an emergency alkalising reserve. The paradoxical result: the more dairy you consume, the more calcium you lose.

โŒ Conventional Dogma

Dairy = calcium = strong bones. Recommendation: 2โ€“3 daily portions of milk and derivatives as osteoporosis prevention.

โœ… Hygienist Vision

Animal proteins acidify the blood (pH 7.30โ€“7.34). The body neutralises the acidosis by extracting calcium from bones. Dairy removes more calcium than it provides.

๐Ÿ”ฌ
Scientific Validation โ€” Nurses' Health Study (Harvard)

The Nurses' Health Study, one of the largest international epidemiological studies conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health on over 77,000 women, found that high dairy consumption did not reduce the risk of bone fractures. Subsequent studies confirmed the mechanism: animal proteins generate a renal acid load that causes hypercalciuria (calcium loss in urine), confirming the hygienist view. Alkalising plant sources โ€” sesame, almonds, kale, broccoli โ€” provide bioavailable calcium without acidification.

3. The Deception of Refined Sugars

3
Refined Sugars: "Pure Energy" or Slow Poison?
Hygienism: antinutrient always ยท Modern science: confirmed 2000โ€“2020

In the 1970s, the food industry โ€” with the active support of researchers funded by the sugar industry, as documented in studies published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2016 โ€” actively promoted white sugar as a source of pure, immediate energy. Fats were blamed as the enemy of cardiovascular health. Sugar was harmless, even useful.

Hygienism had for decades identified refined sugar as an antinutrient: stripped of all the enzymatic and mineral cofactors present in the original sugar cane, it requires the body to draw on its own reserves of vitamins and minerals to be metabolised, producing a biological debt with every intake.

โŒ 1970sโ€“90s: the dogma

Sugar is "pure energy". The cardiovascular problem is fats. Sugar doesn't cause weight gain if you exercise.

โ†’
โœ… Today: science confirms

Sugar causes systemic inflammation, neurochemical addiction (activates the same circuits as cocaine), insulin resistance and documented Brain Fog.

๐Ÿง
Scientific Validation โ€” Neuroscience and Systemic Inflammation

Modern research now recognises refined sugar as a primary cause of low-grade systemic inflammation (Calder et al., 2017), neurochemical addiction (Ahmed et al., 2013 โ€” PLoS ONE), brain fog (from glycaemic oscillations) and alteration of the intestinal microbiota. The WHO has reduced the recommendation for free sugars to less than 5% of daily caloric intake. Hygienism called it "white poison" 70 years earlier.

4. The Microbiome as Control Centre

4
Intestinal Toxaemia โ†’ Gut-Brain Axis
Hygienism: "Toxaemia" always ยท Modern science: Nature Reviews Neuroscience 2019

What hygienists called "Toxaemia" โ€” the systemic accumulation of intestinal toxins that poison the blood, the brain and the tissues โ€” was considered by conventional medicine to be pseudoscientific fantasy. The gut was seen as a simple transport tube. "Intestinal cleansing" was ridiculed as folklore.

Today, the discovery of the Gut-Brain Axis โ€” the bidirectional communication system between the intestinal microbiota and the central nervous system, mediated by the vagus nerve and hundreds of neurotransmitters โ€” is the most advanced frontier of neuroscience and psychiatry.

โŒ Conventional View (until the 1990s)

The gut is an organ of digestion and absorption. The brain and mood do not depend on the gut. "Intestinal toxaemia" is pseudoscience.

โœ… Hygienist Vision (always)

The gut is the "second brain". Pathological fermentation produces toxins that reach the brain causing fatigue, depression, brain fog. Cleansing the gut = freeing the mind.

๐Ÿฆ
Scientific Validation โ€” Nature, Johns Hopkins, Nobel

Microbiome research is today the most funded frontier of medicine. Nature (2015) published fundamental studies on the role of the microbiota in systemic health. Johns Hopkins Medicine (2021) confirmed that 95% of serotonin โ€” the wellbeing neurotransmitter โ€” is produced in the gut, not the brain. Nature Reviews Neuroscience (2019) formalised the Gut-Brain Axis as an autonomous enteric nervous system with 500 million neurons. What Hygienism called "Intestinal Toxaemia" is now called dysbiosis, leaky gut and systemic neuroinflammation.

The Romeo Method does not stand against scientific progress, but is founded on those Universal Biological Laws which, though discovered by modern science with delay, have been the basis of life for millennia.
