🌿 Over 70% of the Western population is magnesium-deficient — and most don't know it.
Not because they eat badly, but because agricultural soils have been depleted of it, chronic stress burns through it at an accelerated rate, and standard blood tests don't detect it. Meanwhile the body pays the price every day: fatigue, tension, disturbed sleep, low testosterone.
There is one mineral that your body uses for over 300 essential biochemical reactions — from cellular energy production to protein synthesis, from sleep regulation to nervous and muscular balance. Without it, virtually nothing works well. That mineral is magnesium, and it is the most deficient micronutrient in the modern Western population.
The paradox is this: magnesium deficiency rarely shows up in routine blood tests. 99% of the body's magnesium is found inside cells and bones — only 0.3% circulates in the blood. So serum values can appear "within normal range" while cells are chronically running low. Doctors look at blood values, see them as normal, and don't investigate further.
Meanwhile you feel chronic fatigue, night cramps, irritability, light sleep, drops in concentration. All symptoms that could have a thousand causes — and which for this reason are systematically ignored or attributed to "modern stress".
Why we're all deficient in magnesium
Widespread magnesium deficiency isn't a problem of "poor diet" in the classic sense. It's a structural consequence of how our nutrition and lifestyle have changed over the past 50 years:
Intensive farming has progressively stripped soils of minerals. Comparative studies show that today's foods contain on average 30–40% less magnesium than the same foods 50 years ago. You eat more or less the same things as your grandparents, but extract fewer nutrients.
Every stress episode activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis with cortisol release. Cortisol actively promotes renal excretion of magnesium: the more pressure you're under, the more you eliminate in urine. Modern stress creates a vicious cycle — less magnesium, more stress reactivity; more stress, less magnesium.
Magnesium is found mainly in dark leafy greens, seeds, legumes and raw cacao. The standard Western diet — rich in processed products, refined cereals, animal proteins — is structurally poor in these sources. Wheat refining, for example, eliminates up to 80% of the original magnesium content.
Caffeine increases urinary excretion of magnesium. Alcohol interferes with intestinal absorption. Refined sugar requires magnesium to be metabolised, consuming reserves. If you drink coffee daily, have a glass of wine in the evening and eat sweet products, you are actively emptying your magnesium stores.
Scientific Evidence
A review published in Nutrients (Rosanoff et al., 2012) analysed nutritional data from over 10 Western countries, concluding that at least 60–70% of the adult population does not reach the recommended daily intake of magnesium. The study emphasises that subclinical deficiency — the kind that doesn't show up in standard tests — is the most common and most overlooked form, and is associated with chronic fatigue, hypertension, insulin resistance and impaired sleep. The 7 signs your magnesium is low
Subclinical magnesium deficiency manifests with diffuse, non-specific symptoms — which makes it difficult to recognise but not impossible, if you know what to look for:
- Muscle cramps and night-time tension — especially in the calves. Magnesium is the natural "relaxant" of muscle: it regulates the calcium/magnesium ratio in muscle fibres. Without it, muscles remain in a state of hyperexcitability.
- Persistent morning fatigue — magnesium is a cofactor of the Krebs cycle, the process by which mitochondria produce ATP (energy). Without sufficient magnesium, cellular energy production is compromised.
- Light, fragmented, non-restorative sleep — magnesium regulates GABA, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It is also a cofactor in melatonin synthesis. Even mild deficiencies significantly degrade deep sleep quality.
- Irritability and "on edge" nervousness — magnesium modulates the response of NMDA receptors to glutamate (the main excitatory neurotransmitter). When it's low, the nervous system becomes hyperexcitable: you get annoyed over nothing, you're "on a short fuse".
- Frequent headaches, especially temporal — cerebral vasoconstriction is one of the mechanisms of migraine, and magnesium is a natural vasodilator. Studies on magnesium supplementation consistently show a reduction in migraine frequency.
- Constipation and slow digestion — magnesium regulates intestinal peristalsis. Its deficiency slows transit, generating constipation and bloating.
- Palpitation sensation or irregular heartbeat — magnesium is essential for the electrical stability of the heart. Its deficiency can cause extrasystoles and the sensation of "heart flutters", especially in stressful situations.
Magnesium and testosterone: the link nobody explains
Among all the functions of magnesium, the least known — but perhaps most relevant for men over 35 — is its direct role in testosterone production and availability.
The main mechanism is this: testosterone in the blood exists in two forms. That "bound" to SHBG (Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin) is inactive — it cannot enter cells and produces no effects. The "free" form is biologically active. Magnesium reduces SHBG activity, increasing the proportion of free testosterone available to the body.
In practical terms: even with total testosterone levels "within normal range", a magnesium deficiency can mean that much of that hormone is "locked" and unusable. The result is a symptom profile typical of low testosterone — fatigue, reduced libido, difficulty building muscle mass, flat mood — with tests that apparently show nothing abnormal.
Scientific Evidence
The study by Cinar et al. (2011), published in Biological Trace Element Research, measured magnesium and testosterone levels in three groups of men: sedentary, athletes training 90–120 minutes per day, and more intensively training athletes. In all three groups, magnesium levels correlate positively with free and total testosterone levels. Magnesium and sleep: the missing cofactor
Restorative sleep requires two fundamental biological conditions: the nervous system must be able to "switch off" (transition from wakefulness to sleep) and circadian rhythms must work correctly (melatonin production at the right time). Magnesium is involved in both processes.
For the transition to sleep: magnesium activates GABA-A receptors in the brain — the same receptors targeted by anxiolytic drugs and sleeping pills. In a natural and non-artificial way, magnesium "switches off" the nervous system in the evening. Its deficiency keeps the brain in a state of hypervigilance that makes it difficult to fall asleep or reach deep sleep phases.
For melatonin production: magnesium is a cofactor of the enzyme AANAT (arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase), which converts serotonin into melatonin in the pineal gland. Without sufficient magnesium, this conversion is inefficient — and the melatonin produced is below what's needed, regardless of environmental darkness.

The absorption of dietary magnesium also depends on the state of the intestinal mucosa — an inflamed or permeable intestine drastically reduces its absorption.
