Every year, the average testosterone concentration in the Western male population falls. Not by a negligible amount: a longitudinal study from the Massachusetts Male Aging Study documented a decline of 17% per decade β independent of the subjects' age. We are not ageing faster. We are living in an environment that dismantles male biology.
Testosterone replacement therapy with exogenous testosterone is the standard response. But it is the wrong answer to the wrong question. If the engine is burning oil because the circuit is broken, pouring in new oil doesn't fix the circuit.
The Biology of Testosterone: How It Is Produced
This chain (HPG axis β Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonads) is elegant. It is also highly sensitive to disruptors. Elevated cortisol blocks hypothalamic GnRH. Excess oestrogens (endogenous or dietary xenoestrogens) inhibit pituitary LH. Chronic inflammation reduces the secretory capacity of Leydig cells. And chronic insulin stimulates aromatase β the enzyme that converts testosterone to oestradiol.
The 4 Silent Destroyers
1. Chronic cortisol: the stress hormone directly competes with testosterone for steroid precursors (cholesterol β pregnenolone). The "pregnenolone steal" is documented: the more cortisol you produce, the less testosterone the body can synthesise.
2. Dietary xenoestrogens: conventional dairy products contain oestradiol, progesterone and bovine growth hormones. Organochlorine pesticides, BPA and DEHP plasticisers mimic oestrogenic action on androgen receptors, blocking the testosterone signal.
3. Hyperinsulinaemia: chronic glycaemic spikes elevate insulin. Insulin stimulates aromatase in adipose tissue, converting testosterone to oestradiol. This explains why visceral adiposity and low testosterone always appear together.
4. Systemic inflammation: pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-Ξ±) directly inhibit Leydig cell function. A leaky gut releasing bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) into the blood keeps the inflammatory fire burning 24/7.
Travison et al. (2007) in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism demonstrated that the decline in testosterone in the male population is independent of individual biological ageing and correlated instead with environmental and dietary factors. The study followed 1,374 men across three longitudinal cohorts.
Travison TG et al., "A population-level decline in serum testosterone levels in American men", JCEM 2007Chemistry vs. Biology: The Two Strategies
- Exogenous testosterone (gels, injections, patches)
- Suppresses endogenous production (negative feedback)
- Testicular atrophy in the medium term
- Polycythaemia, thrombosis, cardiovascular risk
- Permanent drug dependence
- Does not remove environmental causes
- Increases oestradiol via aromatisation of exogenous T
- Restoration of internal cellular environment
- Elimination of xenoestrogens and inflammation
- Cortisol reduction with adaptogens (Raw Maca)
- Intermittent fasting: lowers insulin and aromatase
- Endogenous production maintained and enhanced
- No suppressive effect on the HPG axis
- Sperm quality improvement +32% (Gonzales, 2012)
Maca and the Three Varieties: Understanding the Difference
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) grows in the Peruvian Andes at 4,000β4,500 m altitude. Not all varieties are equal for masculine vitality. The three main ones differ by phytochemical profile and action on the HPG axis:
The most common variety (85% of production). Rich in glucosinolates, benzyl alkaloids and macamides. Main action: general energy balance, libido, fatigue reduction. Ideal as a daily base for all metabolic types.
Richer in specific glucosinolates (glucoraphanin). Studies (Gonzales-CastaΓ±eda, 2008) show selective effects on prostate health and the female HPG axis. In men: bone density support and benign prostatic hyperplasia reduction.
The rarest variety (5% of production). Maximum concentration of macamides and macaenes β the alkaloids that act most directly on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Gonzales (2012) studies: +32% sperm density, +26% sperm motility in 12 weeks.
Gonzales GF et al. (2012) in Andrologia documented that Black Maca increases sperm density by 32% and motility by 26% in healthy subjects after 12 weeks of supplementation β without altering baseline hormonal levels. This suggests an adaptogenic action on the HPG axis rather than a direct androgenic effect.
Gonzales GF et al., "Effect of Lepidium meyenii (Maca) on spermatogenesis in male rats acutely exposed to high altitude", Andrologia 2012The Power Trilogy: Synergy for Masculine Vitality
We are not forcing nature β we are removing what is blocking it. The Power Trilogy acts on three complementary levels of the male hormonal axis:
Primary adaptogen. Regulates the HPG axis, reduces cortisol, stimulates endogenous LH. Dried below 42Β°C to preserve active alkaloids and enzymatic integrity.
Blood oxygenation with non-haem iron and phycocyanin. Oxygenated muscles are more responsive to testosterone. Reduces the inflammation that inhibits Leydig cells.
PEA and AFA phycocyanins reduce neuroinflammation. Mental cortisol is a silent testosterone destroyer: Klamath breaks the stress-cortisol-aromatase axis.
The Biological Protocol for Testosterone
π¬ Testosterone Restoration Protocol β 28 Days
-
1
Eliminate dairy and high-glycaemic foods for the first 4 weeks. Remove the primary source of xenoestrogens and the main driver of aromatisation.
-
2
Intermittent fasting 20:00β12:00: keeps insulin low during night-time hours, inhibits aromatase and releases GH β the natural synergist of testosterone.
-
3
Raw Black Maca 2β3g at 12:00 in a green smoothie (no heat). Cycle 4 weeks ON / 1 week OFF. Start with 1g in the first week.
-
4
Spirulina 3β5g at 12:00: oxygenation and reduction of pro-inflammatory IL-6. Increases the bioavailability of testosterone in target tissues.
-
5
Klamath 1g on an empty stomach (12:00): switches off neuroinflammation and reduces mental cortisol β the silent destroyer of the HPG axis. Temperature never above 42Β°C.
β Frequently Asked Questions
"Testosterone is not a number. It is the biological manifestation of a man living in harmony with his own nature. When the internal environment is clean β without chronic cortisol, without xenoestrogens, without inflammation β the body produces exactly what it needs. No external chemistry is required. What is needed is to eliminate what is blocking the signal."
